Six Social Marketing Sins

in Social Media

nonoOk, maybe not ‘sins’ but definitely no-no’s.

1. Thou shalt not spam.

Social marketing can have a sales element to it but blatant spamming will just get you on people’s ignore list.

2. Thou shalt not reveal TMI (Too Much Information).

While it may be tempting to tell a service like FriendFeed or Twitter your every daily move, don’t over do it!

3. Don’t spend all your time on one social media tool.

Spread the wealth! Consider using several services, especially the ones like Ping FM and FriendFeed that send your updates to other services.

4. Don’t spend your whole day on social marketing.

It’s easy to get caught up and have this be counter-productive for you.

5. Social Media is Not Just A Soap box!

Are you tweeting/plurking/chatting up the world but not responding to direct messages or participating in conversations? Don’t just be on your own soapbox, the key to success here is to be SOCIAL.

6. Don’t feel the need to follow everyone.

It’s okay to be choosy about who you follow and let follow you. For some who are very famous online they can have thousands of people in their network and they don’t have to feel the need to answer everyone because people will be more forgiving. But if you don’t have at least a bit of a niche, you might consider trying to keep your marketing efforts tight so that you don’t waste time on efforts that might not be very fruitful. Feel free to NOT follow those who are breaking these six rules, for instance.  Feel free to follow the big gurus when you’re just getting started. Too much going on in your lifestream feeds will just sound like white noise after a while so it’s okay to keep it slightly targeted so you can get more out of it.

Have a most outstanding day.

Hi Sean,

This is very sound advice. I think I’ve got it under control but maybe that’s because I’m not utilizing them to their maximum potential. Maybe if I spent more time socializing on them I would waste more time.

But, as it stands I normally just go there to do a few status updates and make a few comments. I tend to see them only as business tools and I’m still working out how to use them effectively.

Thanks Sean

I am very aware of the whole spamming issue. I am getting a lot of rubbish on Twitter, and must sort all that out.
I am tending to spend a bit of time on facebook, but that’s mainly because of just setting up the fan pages. I will winding it back a bit.
I’m not sure at this stage which of the other one’s to be involved in. I thought about Myspace but I understood that was mainly the younger crowd, so iIll have to look into it further
