How To Increase Online Followers – SMO Tips

in Social Media

If you want to use social media tools to help you with your online business, many of those sites work best when you develop a following.

How To Increase Online FollowersWhile many of your activities can be indexed online and found in search engines, the online community aspect of social media optimisation (SMO) can be helpful because it can drive traffic to your websites and create a viral effect when your followers display your user name and/or updates to their followers.

Here are some tips to help you increase online followers..

Follow People

Some tools let you search for specific demographics. By finding people who your website could appeal to, you could not just get a follower but you could get a follower who may buy something from you.

A good illustration of this is Twitter. If you were selling diet supplements, for instance, you might do a keyword search on words related to diets and those talking about the topic could be good people to follow.

Be A Good Online Citizen

Comment on people’s updates, re-post their updates.. be helpful. All these things can make you more follow worthy.

Your Profile

If the site you’re posting on offers you a profile, this is a good opportunity to attract others. Use the photo, use the bio, use the links, and make yourself look worthy of being followed. Don’t use it to be boastful and don’t make your profile look overtly promotional. Look to mentors and peers for some good examples.

Manage Your Ratios

Look at your activities. Keep a low ratio of self- promotion. For every dozen updates, how many are self serving versus helpful? This is something that people considering following you will look at. And, this is something that people following you may pay attention to. The results could impact whether or not they continue to follow you or not.

Provide Value

Do you provide interesting information on social networking sites? If the updates and links you share are interesting to people, you have a greater chance of them following you, clicking on your links, and re-posting your links on their profile. Go out of your way to be interesting and provide value to conversations and you’ll be on track to increase online followers, making your social networking much more powerful.

Exactly Lisa, it can be a slow progress when you’re starting out. Things tend to snowball as you move forward and continue interacting :)

Hey Sean,

Good advice. I started out taking bad advice from several sources online, built huge followings of people who could care less who I was and wasted a ton of my time.

It’s good to see real advice on how to interact on these sites.

Hi Sean,

Great post about how to increase online followers. But I quite often follow people and they don’t follow me back. So I end up with lots of following and very little follower. :(

Following others in a similar niche and providing quality updates should entice more people to follow you back Wilson. It’s a work in progress, keep going mate, these things take time ;)

Hi Sean,

Absolutely love the article. I watched a DVD last night on Social Media and felt a bit daunted by needing to have so many followers on facebook, twitter etc. After reading this article however it has helped me realise that I really need to put in the effort and ‘share the love’ and be a good online citizen (and not just expect people to come to me). Oh and developing interesting material might just help a little bit too!! ;)

Thanks

Jaimee

I definitely back the managing ratios and providing value tips Sean. If you are seen to participate, provide something useful to other and not just go on with blatant self-promotion then social media could become a huge success for you. There seems to be this fine line between being social and interactive and just annoying. Wonder where I sit ;)
