Wouldn’t it be nice if you could just plug in to requirements to optimise your site well for all the search engines at one time? But alas, it’s not that easy.
Should you run separate SEO campaigns for every major search engine out there? The good news is that it’s not really necessary. Content is king and quality rules over techniques so many say that if you optimise for Google, the other search engines will follow.
Good SEO is Viral
If you were to experiment with rankings for specific keywords, you’d see that you can get to top spot on some search engines and will only hit page two on others. While search engine algorithms are different, it’s impossible to simultaneously optimise for every site out there unless you’re doing specific things on specific sites to optimize one site per search engine.
If you tried that, you’d be guessing (because search engines don’t divulge all their secrets because they don’t want anyone to game the system) and as soon as you hit top spot, they’ll probably change the rules.
What’s the best approach to rank well in sites like Yahoo, MSN, and Google?
- Utilise your meta, header, image, and H1 tags
- Write a catchy title
- Write good content that makes good use of natural and long tail keywords written naturally into the content
- Work on both on page and off-page SEO
- Use Web 2.0 tools to your advantage
- Don’t forget to write for your customer. Regardless of how many indexings you get on the top five SERPs, if you don’t provide value and write tight you won’t convert browsers to buyers.
- Read your site stats so you can see where your traffic is coming from. This information is a goldmine for you!

Hi Sean,
I am trying to learn SEO so that my posts and my site have the best chance of ranking highly in the search engines. I think I’m getting better at this but it’s the other areas which are more of a concern. It’s like I’m getting the technical stuff and I have a lot to learn with the rest.
I’m really not using the various social media tools to their full advantage. It’s something I’m working on. And, I’m terrible at writing catchy titles that make people want to read my posts. However, I have a tiny Squidoo page where I’m experimenting with this, so hopefully I’ll get better soon.
