SEO TermsSEO is one of the most important aspects of marketing online. It’s something that should be a part of business in every online business.

Without SEO you’re leaving it to chance that the right people will find your website, sales page, or online store. Just because you build a website doesn’t mean that customers will suddenly visit.

Those who don’t pay much attention to search engine optimisation don’t have much luck online unless they have absolutely no competition in their niche whatsoever.

There are a lot of methods used to increase the search engine optimisation of a website. Things are done on the website itself and things are done outside the website to make the site appear more relevant. Search engines like Google look for relevancy and have a complex set of variables that are looked at when they categorise a website so it’s important that you have some idea of what those variables are.

A bit of knowledge can help you position yourself well so that the search engine results pages will feature pages on your website. Featuring pages on your website will help you get people to the site and hopefully get them to buy something from you.

6 SEO Terms

Here are 6 SEO Terms that are worth learning about:

1. Organic SEO
2. SEO Hats
3. On Page SEO
4. Off Page SEO
5. Keywords
6. The Long Tail

1. Organic SEO

Organic refers to an all-natural approach and this means you’re not paying search engines for high rankings. Unlike sponsored advertisements, organic search engine optimisation happens naturally because search engine spiders (little software programs that index and categorise web pages) rank your site.

Instead of having to pay for exposure, it happens through search engine optimisation which means that your SEO efforts will bring you natural organic traffic. Organic SEO is an ongoing effort and just because you land in the top spot for a search engine term today doesn’t mean you get to hold onto that spot.

2. SEO Hats

There are three coloured hats in SEO: white, gray and black. If you think of this in terms of the old west and cowboys, you can guess which is good and which is considered evil. Then there are gray areas that may or may not get you in trouble. White hat methods of SEO are considered to be honest. Black hat SEO methods are considered unethical.

Most search engines eventually catch on to black hat methods and penalise the offending website so white hat methods are the safest way to proceed.

3. On Page SEO

On page SEO refers to something you do on the actual site. It could be keyword optimisation, meta tags, site maps and other methods that are done on the website itself to make it appear more credible and relevant to search engines.

4. Off Page SEO

Off page SEO refers to things you do outside of the site to elevate a site’s status in the search engines. A good example of off page SEO is to get the site linked to on other pages.

5. Keywords

Keywords in SEO are the words you are trying to rank for. If you’re planning to sell widgets, you will want to rank for the word widget as well as other words related to that word.

6. The Long Tail

The long tail is a more precise keyword strategy. Again, if you were selling widgets, you’d want to try for the long tail which would mean you were targeting a specific demographic. In this case you might target people in California who wanted to buy used pink widgets so you’d optimise for the phrase “used pink widgets California”.

By using long tail keywords, you could rank higher for your targeted phrase and have a better chance at ranking well for it since the phrase widget alone would have a lot of competition.

Have a most outstanding day.
