Optimising Your Website For Bing

BingIf you’ve checked out how you’re ranking in Bing (Microsoft’s hot new decision search engine), you’ll see it varies from the search engine results in Google and Yahoo. Getting great results in a hot search engine is a good thing.

Can You Optimise Your Site For Bing?

Search engines can have varying algorithms. If you search for a particular keyword on all the big search engines you’ll see that only some of the same results turn up on the main page. Search engines don’t reveal the details of their algorithms but many experts are already analyzing the results between various SERPs.

There are SEO resources that suggest some of the things Bing looks seriously at include:

  • The age of the domain.
  • The title tags in the pages that link to your site.
  • Tag utilization.
  • Less of the on page optimisation and more off page optimisation.
  • Inbound links.

Should you optimise your website specifically for Bing? You should definitely take the things that Bing, Yahoo, and Google take into account. Experts suggest that the best way to get maximum results on Bing is to work on a quality inbound link campaign and looking closely at the links you choose to link from could help you.

Having authority links pointing to your website will help on all three big search engines and it will help drive the type of quality foot traffic you’re looking for too.

Are You Video Marketing Yet?

Bing’s search results pages list videos separately from other search engine results. If you’re in a highly competitive niche, online video could definitely help you on Bing, especially if you make good use of the video tag / description fields.

Submit Your URL To Bing

http://www.bing.com/docs/submit.aspx is the place to submit your URL. The MSNbot will probably find you but it doesn’t hurt to hurry things along! While it’s probably not necessary to change your current SEO tactics dramatically, it’s a good idea to watch your website analytics reports to see what type of traffic is coming from Bing so you can capitalize on it.

Have a most outstanding day.

I have been guikty of concentrating on Google too much. I know I have to look at the others as well. This was brought home to me the other day when I had a commentor tell me they found me on Bing

Hi Sean,

I’ve just been doing standard SEO techniques generally for all the search engines. I guess it’s time to work out what each of the search engines like and see if I can’t give it to them.

Hi Sean

Great information. I have heard of Bing but never really chased up the information about it. That is one really ‘groovy’ thing about this competition, I get to learn about everything every successful internet marketer would possibly need to know.

Yes I will be video marketing so the fact that Bing lists videos separately on their search results is very handy.

I will submit my URL to Bing and watch the website analytics report for incoming traffic. It will be interesting to see how it compares to Googles report.

Like most folks, I focus on Google, but went to Bing and submitted some URLs.

I didn’t come up on the search for some pages like I do in Google – except my fiction books site occupies #2 and #3 for it’s title

How much of the market does bing dominate? is it worth optimising for bing? Google seems to be the one to be on and who knows..they may swallow all the other search engines eventually \m/

Not a great deal at the moment Jody, but Bing is fairly new and you never know what amount of market share they may grab in the future… although they are up against a pretty tough competitor ;-)
