Choosing a Niche in Internet Marketing

How do you choose a niche to market? There are a lot of things selling like hotcakes and niche marketing is making some people a lot of money. Here are some tips to help you decide on what product or type of product(s) to sell.

Here are at least three questions to ask yourself before deciding:

  1. What do you know?
  2. What do you enjoy?
  3. What do people want?

What do you know?

Capitalizing on your existing expertise can help you get a running start. This doesn’t mean you have to be a absolute guru in your niche or that you’ll have to restrict yourself to  choose just one area to market  but as you build your business it definitely gives you an advantage if the first niche you dabble with is something you know at least a little bit about.

What do you enjoy learning about?

Ensure you don’t choose a niche that bores you because you’ll have to get intimately acquainted with it!  This is most important for the first niche you dabble in. You don’t have to always go with what you know but doing this as you develop your own success formula is important because you’ll be writing and marketing and selling on what you know as you develop a success formula.  After you figure out what works, you can apply that newly acquired (and now expert) knowledge to something you’re less familiar with and have a good chance of seeing it be a success.

What do people want?

You don’t need to spin your wheels trying to sell swamp land in Florida or a fad that is “sooooo five minutes ago!” Learn about what people want. There are a lot of free online tools that can help you such as Google Trends and  by looking at what the top ClickBank products are. And, such as digging through your web traffic statistics after you are up and running so that you can see what is working, what search terms people are using and what people click on once they get to your page.

You don’t have to live with just one niche but when you’re first starting out, it’s a wise idea to start with one focus area and build up to hit some goals before you start dividing your time between several projects.

Hi Sean,

There are a lot of free tools to help you research potential niches. I use the Google Wonder Wheel to help me come up with terms that I hadn’t thought of before in a particular niche.

But, I really love Google Insights for Search. You can get so much in-depth information about any niche you like. The information is invaluable for helping me decide on a niche. :)

Generally though, I choose topics that I love and then these Google tools help me decide.

Hi Sean

I have some ideas for creating a niche . As I read your three common questions, it was number three that I got stuck on. The other 2 are fine to answer but 3, well how do I know what other people want, how do I know if they want what I want?

This is the toughest part for me is working out number 3. So I will start researching a niche I am passionate about using your advice and see what I come up with.

I also like Jazz’s suggestion about using Google Wonder Wheel.

I know what I know,
I know what I enjoy,
but do I know what people want,
Well I know what I would want to know in my niche, so I guess yes I know what people want, This is not the first niche that I started in but I know now just where I will be headed now.
It is such a competitive niche, I didn’t think I could do it but I can.

Thankyou for explaining the points to consider when you are setting up a new site for a niche. Research is so important and the third point “What do people want” is the tricky one. You have given us some great resources over recent posts to be able to have the edge on finding what people are wanting to gives us better change at success.
