Have you jumped on the blog memes bandwagon yet? A blog meme is a viral game where you generate links and interesting conversations through asking others to participate. A meme might help you in a few ways including:
- Generating traffic
- Generating backlinks to your site
- Enticing new blog members
- Making online friends
A popular meme that has been coasting through cyberspace for ages is the four things meme. It might say to name 4 jobs you’ve done in your life, 4 cities you’ve lived in, 4 places you’ve had a holiday and 4 indulgences you couldn’t live without. At the end, you’d pass the meme onto four people by identifying their blogs and suggest they link back to you in their post. If you start a meme, there’s a good chance that everyone who participates will link back to your post. It can be great fun in a viral way and if you find other memes and hop onto them by self-nomination and linking back to the original post, you can make new friends.
The Meme Payoff
The backlinks will be present, you’ll probably get new visitors and you might even get permanent subscribers or people to buy whatever you’re selling online.
A meme might seem like a time waster if you get invited to participate in too many but participating some selective ones could be helpful in terms of pleasing your subscribers who are kind enough to link to you and comment on your blog.
Have a most outstanding day.

You learn something new every day. I haven’t heard abut a meme before and I haven’t been invited to one. Shame. Looks like I will have to start one myself
Hi Sean,
Like Renee, I’ve never heard of a blog meme. Are they still being used? I might have to Google it to find out because it actually sounds like a great way to get visitors and backlinks.
I have seen a version of this on Twitter that I love to play, just not with blogs. Interesting.
Just about anything can work online if you put the time and effort in Jazz.
Sean very interesting.
Where are they generally held?
Would it work in something like Facebook?
I feel like I am in a meme right now
When stuff goes viral on the internet it can take off like a rocket. A recent example is Lady Gaga’s video for her song new Telephone. If we can find a way to redirect viral traffic, it can potentially be a great way to get new visitors. It doesn’t need to be on the scale of Lady Gaga’s efforts, but it does need to capture people’s attention – which is what marketing is all about anyway.
I knew I’d come to the right place when I sign on for the Learn and Earn competition. Using blog memes to create buzz and get links is another thing I never would have though to using. Another idea to go into my Learn and Earn competition notebook.
Well I never! The things they come up with. Sean how on earth do you keep finding these little nuggets! You mustn’t get any work done! LOL
But the meme thing does sound intrguing to say the least – anything to get more links I like, plus as you indicate there are other possible benefits such as potential subscribers.
Just have to remember to be selctive as you say
Oh no more games! I saw a reference to a blog meme on another post and must admit I have never heard of such a thing. It’s nice to come across this explanation. Sounds interesting but I think I should start a miscellaneous section in my notebook for ‘to do when I have extra time on my hands’. HA
Wow, I have never heard of this – it sounds similar to those email you get – reply to me and send to 10 others with questions like your favourite colour and what you ate last night for dinner.
What an interesting idea – but maybe also a blackhole of time if you don’t manage it carefully.
Hi Sean,
Sounds like it could be fun once you got into the swing of it. What a great way to create buzz and get links.
If it’s another way to generate traffic and make online friends then I’ll jump on the blog meme bandwagon. Mmm 4 indulgences I can’t live without…
My my a meme!
Well it’s good to know what it is if ever I should come across it and it is also something I could look at again in the future. Thank you for explaining.
