SEO requires a multifaceted approach. There are so many variables that beginners should learn about and even seasoned professionals continue to learn on a regular basis. It all changes so fast!
Here are some SEO tips for beginners that want to learn how to optimise their website for search engines.
1. Publish Regularly
The best way to get noticed is to publish consistently. If you write blog posts, post every day if you can. Do so and search engines will automatically crawl your website and will quickly index links.
2. Social Bookmarking
Use social bookmarking tools on everything you publish. Bookmarking tools are effective. People read them and search engines pay attention to them as well. Get your story on Digg. Put your thumbs up on Stumbleupon. Mixx it up with Mixx. Don’t forget Twitter and Facebook! Try different tools out and analyse later to see which ones work best. Here is a list of some of the top bookmarking sites.
3. Build Networks
Build followers who subscribe to your site and your social feeds. They’ll not only read your updates but they’ll forward them to their friends and followers, too. Quid pro quo! Build trust in those networks by providing valuable info, by NOT spamming, and by promoting for others. Promote for others and they’ll promote unto you!
4. Build Backlinks
One of the most valuable SEO tips you should implement, is to build backlinks regularly. Do this through article marketing, submitting guest posts, and linking to your sites from blog comments, blog posts, and on microblogging / bookmarking sites. It adds up and each link is considered by search engines to be akin to a popularity vote. Popularity = more traffic. Here are some ways for you to get more backlinks.
5. Keyword Research
Figure out what people who buy what you sell are searching for. There are any number of free and premium keyword research tools out there that can help you. Sprinkle those keywords in to your anchor text, titles, and subheadings on directories and make sure you link to your landing pages with those phrases from blog posts, Web 2.0 pages, and microblogging updates.
6. Write Great Meta Descriptions
Put your keywords into your meta descriptions and write them like a “what’s in it for me” statement. Tell people what they’ll get if they click and make them want to click! This will help you with SEO and with human clicks.
It doesn’t matter if you’re in first spot if the description on second and third is more compelling so make sure your meta description kicks proverbial butt and makes the browsing web surfer want to click your link. (But do make sure you deliver. A click is pointless if you can’t compel them to buy once they land on your page)
7. Analyse Your Stats
Figure out which SEO tips are working best. Look at your website statistics reports and see what’s bringing you traffic. Analyse it, and then repeat!

One things that I have started doing a lot more is to analyze my website statistics.
