The power of the spoken word, especially when it comes to making purchase decisions, is tremendous. Human beings typically go with the sanction of the community when buying something and that is the reason why plenty of review sites on the internet see a never ending flow of Online Traffic.
We all want to know what others think of the object we want to buy, don’t we? But to run a successful review site isn’t just about slapping together a few webpages and writing some rubbish that doubles up as content.
Here are some tips you could use to bring out a super Review Site:
Focus On One Product
The signs of a poorly designed and conceived Review Site are all evident when there doesn’t seem to be a focus on the product/service category that the review site is all about. Unless you are a “Wall Street Journal” level publisher, you would pretty much do better if you focused on just one product or service category.
For instance, doing reviews for just laptops, or just for smart phones, or just for web services is a good idea and gives your review site “expert” or “authority” status quickly. It is usually the lack of focus that lets many a site drown in the rather large virtual world of Internet Marketing.
Make The Review Personal
If you’ve ever read a review that reads like a corporate brochure, it isn’t a review worth reading. The very reason reviews are read is for the fact that these reviews are Personal Opinions of consumers who had bought something and used it, which gives the consumers valuable expertise that others seek for validation of a reader’s potential purchase. If the reviews don’t come off as personal, they are not worth reading. Period.
Put Passion Into Your Content
Sometimes, we do have Review Sites on a tight Niche – products or services – and then you also have reviews that are all personal, they still don’t cut the ice for the simple fact that there is no Passion that comes off after reading that review.
A passionate review stirs emotions and makes the reader “feel”. When there is no passion, there is nothing that stimulates the reader and when the reader isn’t engaged, they leave and never return again, which is bad for business.
Leave The Reader Looking For More
More often than not, a Review Site should leave the reader/consumer looking for more. The information presented might be adequate, but not enough. A good review site must have reviews that answer most of the common questions pertaining to the category of products or services that are being reviewed.
Leaving any of this unanswered might not hurt you, but might just induce the researcher to go somewhere else and seek that bit of information he or she is looking for.
The success of any website is usually a combination of great content, practical design, easy navigation and plenty of Online Traffic. Lacking in any of these departments can spell trouble for your review site hence the importance of making a plan and then carefully executing it.

I don’t think I’ll get into that.
I prefer the blog and interacting in social media. I find Facebook great. Really good people in there. I suppose they aren’t all like that, but I haven’t come across any yet.
Hi Sean,
Can you write a review site for a affiliate product that you are trying to sell? As in, can you include ads and links for buying the product? If you say upfront that you love this product and are an affiliate for it?
It looks like review sites are a traffic magnet. I am interested in doing reviews and I think it is sensible to focus on one product at a time.
I would need to write myself a list of the questions I think that my customers would ask about the product and then base my answers on these in my review.
