The term Downline comes from multi-level marketing. With many online income opportunities, the structure of the offer is like a series of building blocks.
A distributor forms their own company selling a specific brand of product and recruits others to help them sell and grow the business. Those at the bottom of the hierarchy make money and a percentage of each sale is distributed to those recruiters above them.
The downline refers to those salespeople you have recruited. These are the people who offer the most potential for creating a successful business. True to its name, some multi-level marketing propositions include more than one level of downlines, depending on its overall structure. The better team you build, the more chance you have of turning a profit and becoming a super affiliate.
Pyramid Schemes Are Not Multi-Level Marketing
We are not referring here to pyramid schemes. In most countries this is an illegal, and potentially devastating, form of getting people to buy into a fraudulent opportunity.
Use extreme caution in responding to any offer that even remotely indicates it may be part of a pyramid scheme. Look for promises of impossibly high returns from distributing a product. An initial investment to join the business is another red flag. In a true pyramid, there is only one person at the top – and he or she is the only one who will profit.
Making The Internet Marketing Downline Work In Your Favour
The key to being a successful business person is managing your staff members. Just like in a traditional bricks-and-mortar company, your downline is the sales staff in your multi-level marketing business.
Get to know them. Your Downline includes people with hopes and fears and interests and strengths and weaknesses, just like anyone else. When you take the time to form a relationship with them, you can then personalise your management techniques and encourage each to give their best efforts.
Part of managing personnel is giving them goals. By establishing a set of clearly defined and attainable goals you are accomplishing two things: motivating the most competitive and successful salespeople on your team, and allowing those who are not successful to move on to other ventures.
Of course, no goals are going to be as motivational as those which are associated with an appropriate reward. In addition to an increase in personal income, give your downline something else to strive for. Sometimes it can be as simple as publicly posting monthly, quarterly and/or annual results. Throw a cyber party to celebrate goal achievement!
Practise what you preach. Do not expect your downline to go out on the internet and hustle sales if you are not willing to do so yourself. Lead by example.
Consider meetings in an online forum. These can serve dual purposes – to discuss sales methods that have proven successful and to offer training to those who need an extra boost. Communication is key in successful management of any sales force.
Multi-level marketing programmes work best when the recruiter and his or her Downline are all striving toward the same goal. First you must define that goal, then offer an appropriate reward for its achievement. In the end, everyone wins.

Hi Sean, I really appreciate what you have just mentioned above about Internet Marking; the schemes and how to make profit. Thank you for sharing great information, it will help me a great deal in future.
Great article Sean, and one thing is, it a great think to have a mentor or even 2 to 3 mentors.
Thankyou for this information. It does have value and given the right people could be very lucrative.
It is something to think about for the future as right now I would not be able to start something like this. I don’t have the volume of a great product nor the promotional skills to attract buyers.
A good distinction between MLM downlines and pyramid selling. Unfortunately, some of the MLM’s I have been approached to join blur that distinction and I just avoid them.
