Pretty eye-catching title, isn’t it? If you want to quit your job and fire your boss, you can do it. If you’re an online marketer, you can do it by grabbing the eyes of people online. If you want to grab the attention of people who may buy your products and earn you money, these kinds of titles can help you because you’ll stand out in the crowd.
The very best thing you can do when you’re writing blog posts, articles, sales letters, or something else that you want people to read is to grab their attention.
After the headline grabs them you need to pique their curiosity in the first paragraph or so and then hold their attention straight through until the punchline which is the call to action that compels readers to buy from you.
Tips for Better Headlines
- Practise writing headlines regularly.
- Scan headlines on well known blogs and websites to see what techniques grab your attention
- Rewrite headlines you find so that you make them better
Tips for Holding the Attention of the Reader
How do you hold the attention of an attention deficit disordered reader? (The net is like that…it creates lack of focus because often too many things are going on and the user is trying to pack as much info vacuuming as possible into the few minutes they’re scanning for something that interests them):
- Write short paragraphs
- Subheadings
- bullets / lists
- Make the copy scannable
- Be succinct!
How to be More Succinct
Set word count levels for yourself. When you review your drafts, trim them. Practise with micro blogging sites. Micro blogging is a great way to practise succinctness because you generally have 140 characters to say what you need to say so you need to be concise and brief. Write tight and avoid the active voice
Anything you can do to be effective in copywriting can result in your being successful enough to actually fire your boss!
Have a most outstanding day.

Are there any really good copy writing resources available?
I look forward to the day I say goodbye to my boss.
Hi Sean,
This is such a great post. I really love the title and yes, it got my attention. This is an area that I seriously am trying to improve on. I’m frustrated with writing boring posts that no-one wants to read. But, I’m yet to make the leap to great attention grabbing titles and posts. I live in hope.
Sounds like a real art…
* Grab their attention with a catchy headline
* Pique their attention in the first paragraph
* Hold their attention until the punchline that will compel them to buy from you.
Also sounds like tall orders, but I’m sure a lot of people are selling this way successfully, so it can be learned by me also.
Hello Sean,
Love the title “How To Quit Your Job And Fire Your Boss” – it got my attention. I like how you say to trim your blogs, something I need to work on because I LOVE to write!! I am also looking into more blogs with video, its seems easier and the viewers don’t have to read that way. Do you prefer videos or writing as a blogger ?
Cheers
Lisa
I enjoy writing Lisa, but we also need to stick with the times… and one of the major things for the time right now is video.
