How does that quote go? Keep your friends close but your enemies closer. Well, the same can be said for your competition. Watching what’s going on with your competition can definitely help you with your own internet marketing efforts for many reasons.
You can follow experienced internet gurus that are out of your league as well as your direct competitors, and watching what they do will help you become a better internet marketer.
Following Guru Internet Marketers
One of the smartest things new Internet Marketers can do is to subscribe to an experienced guru’s list. They say, “The money is in the list” and if that’s true, everyone who’s successful should have a list that you can subscribe to. Check their blog and chances are that there’s something there that you can opt in to receiving such as a free course, special offer, etc.
Opting in to a subscriber list helps you study what that guru does that makes them so successful. You’re not going to copy them or do anything unethical of course, but you can learn to emulate them so that you can become successful.
Very often, experienced and successful Internet Marketers will offer something to get you to join their site such as an e-book, trial membership, or something else of value. Signing up to many internet marketing newsletters can get you a lot of free and valuable information.
Sure, you’re going to be getting a lot of e-mail but you’re also going to gain a lot of knowledge, perspective, and marketing information in the process. You might consider opening a special Gmail, MSN, or Yahoo e-mail account just to keep this information together and keep it from clogging your primary e-mail address.
Following Competitors
As for following competitors, it’s not a bad idea to do so. On the contrary, it’s a great idea and once you’re doing well and have an established email list, you better believe some of your subscribers are going to be your competitors as well.
You can study their methods, find out what they’re promoting, and analyse what you feel you could do better. Subscribe to their newsletter, read their blog and follow them around cyberspace to see what they are doing. Learning about what social media sites they’re on and how they are marketing to potential customers can help you be better at your marketing.
All successful Internet Marketers do a certain amount of competitive analysis, and doing so can help you excel in your own business. The goal is to learn about what’s working for them and find a way to do the same thing, but do it even better!
