If you hear the name “eBay” and all you can think about is a place to bid on someone else’s cast-offs, then you are missing out its potential to help your online business.
There are some great ways of using Online Auction Sites like eBay that can benefit you, from both a seller and a buyer standpoint.
List Your Products On eBay
Even if you already have an established e-commerce site to sell your products, consider starting a wholesale store on eBay. This presents several benefits.
The first is the vast amount of visitors who regularly visit the eBay website. There is simply no way your own commercial site will ever begin to compete with the worldwide reputation and popularity of this auction site giant, nor will you ever get as much as traffic. Use their success to benefit your own bottom line.
Secondly, buyers who are looking for the type of merchandise you sell may be motivated to check out the full offerings on your website. It is advisable to list only your most popular items in your eBay wholesale store, but you might just get a sale from someone who wants something more specific available from your website.
And lastly, the more you sell, the more you will build a reputation as a preferred seller. The higher your seller rating, the more business you will receive. This presents just one more way to make money through your online company.
More Than Just Sales
You can use eBay and other Online Auction Sites for more than just selling your goods. These are also excellent sites to find suppliers. In fact, if you can identify a reliable vendor for complementary products to offer on your e-commerce website, you eliminate the need to buy additional inventory by setting up a drop shipping agreement. Your site makes the sale at a higher price, the supplier ships the goods, and you pay the supplier – quick, easy, and profitable.
Be sure that when you are looking for suppliers you pay attention to their seller’s rating. The drop ship system will never work if the vendor cannot supply the merchandise as promised and within an acceptable time frame.
Try Out New Products
One thing that eBay and similar sites are really good for is to “try out” a new product before you offer it on your own site. There’s no point spending the time and money to procure a new product if there is really no market, or the price point is too high. Offer your trial product on eBay first, if you find there is a great deal of interest, then it’s probably a good one to include in your regular inventory.
Online auctions help you determine the proper price point, too. You can easily experiment with starting bid prices and see what level generates the most activity – and at what price the product ultimately sells for.
Online Auction Sites can provide huge benefits to an online business selling shippable merchandise. It can be used as a complementary supplement to an existing site and also help you determine new products to offer. There are some easy eBay ready website builders and plenty of dropship suppliers that can make the job easy for you as well.
Have a most outstanding day.

Hi Sean,
thanks for the strategy – would never have considered it.
Do you think this could be a good strategy for our healthy cereal product – SuperStart?
Trial – could auction sites work for sending out free trial (plus postage)?
USA – we haven’t got distribution there yet – do you think we should start by eBay then over time form a partnership with a good reliable vendor?
Thanks
Justin
Hi Justin
Almost everything works if you apply the correct, positive actions to a strategy. You just need to get started and stick to it for it to work.
Great post! Online auctions is one of the most profitable online marketing. Starting an auction site needs proper planning. Okay, the idea is to let buyers find an item which they like most. So the thing is, you have to make sure the items you will sell are the things buyers would gravitate into. A collector’s item things or the most wanted things or its kind. So, there is no need for the buyer to jump from auctions site to auctions site.
Can sites like Ebay be used for promotion? I notice Ebay has a facility to place paid ads and was wondering if this would be worthwhile?
Hi Sean,
These are very interesting ideas. I haven’t thought of using Ebay in this way. I haven’t thought of using online auction sites as a way to test new products before I added them to my site. Or, as a place to find suppliers.
You give me so many new ideas of ways to make money online that I don’t know where to start. I’m getting a huge to-do list and I’m going to have to work out what I’m going to start with first.
