If you’re looking to sell products to people on the Internet being at the right place and at the right time can make a huge difference to your success. Timing can prime your business for success. While a certain amount of your copywriting should be timeless and evergreen, some well-timed words can compel your potential customers to buy. Being in the know on what’s hot and what’s not can place you ahead of the curve. Working on timing can help you ensure the continuity of your business.
How do you capitalise on timing?
Are you someone who frequently misses the boat? It can be difficult to stay on top of news that helps you use timing to your advantage but a few minutes a day spent researching can help you. Here are a few tips:
- Follow trends and figure out what people are interested in. Google Trends and “happening” blogs and websites can help you with that. Subscribe to some of your marketing mentors and keep up on your Google reader and your favourite newsletters
- Follow current events in your industry. Know when big product launches are happening and find out the answers to questions people have. If you’re helping them they’ll pay attention to you.
- Be on the cutting edge wherever you can. If you’re the go-to person people will listen to what you have to say and you’ll find out about new offerings before anyone else.
Imagine being there as a marketer when the pet rock or the cabbage patch doll was out? Imagine having the foresight to buy a whack of Tickle Me Elmo dolls when they were first released. Internet marketing can be a bit like that and you can definitely capitalise on the skills of having good timing.
Have a most outstanding day.

Great post! Thanks for sharing!! Very helpful!
Very usefull, Thanks
Hi Sean,
It can be difficult to stay up to date with new trends. I subscribe to every authority blog in my niche (that I have found) and read what they say. I learn a lot by this but it can take up a lot of time.
Also, I love reading Springwise and Tendwatching. Both sites have a lot of the latest entrepreneurial and business ideas out there. They always give me new ideas.
I find keeping up with trends a bit difficult. I mainly use Google Trends and are subscribed to a few blogs about SEO and Blogging. EBay’s trend tool can be helpful at seing what the hot selling items are
Keeping up with all the available information is a challenge in itself these days. Google Alerts is great for keeping up with my niches and following trends and other blogs. But still a lot to read … I guess the next thing I will have to learn is speed-reading
Hi Sean
Oh if we only had a crystal ball. Some people in this life are very savvy with creating new trends. I am new to this Internet marketing business and I see that I am going to need to really do some research and homework around how to pick these winners. Is it an inbuilt talent or can it be learned I wonder?
It can be learned – although I suspect there is also a bit of luck and imagination in the mix
Timing is certainly critical in Internet Marketing simply because the consumers’ whim can change almost from moment-to-moment based on what they’ve seen or read just a few minutes ago. We are in an instant communications world when trend changing events are reported immediately. Keeping up with changing style, fashions and wants is a never ending task for the Internet Marketer. In the past I’ve utilized Google Reader, Google Alerts and Google Trends to see what is going on but I imagine I’ll have to adopt more tools if I intend to get serious about Internet Marketing.
I just Googled “future trends in internet marketing” – some interesting results. Some include ecommerce with mobiles (yuck)
Another related to maintaining SEO, email marketing, PPC videos (how much would that cost!)
I tend to be behind the boat too often – but not that there are great tools out there with Twitter and Google and Facebook and lots more there are really no more excuses.
My father-in-law imported 1000s of dutch clogs 15 years ago as they were going to be the new trend……………..he still has a lot left! (but then those croc shoes took off about 5 years ago) – so it is timing.
