Google Buzz was released in early February 2010 as a new social media service. It is a part of Google Profiles/Gmail and allows the users to stream various types of content to their friends’ pages.
Updates from other social media sites, including Twitter and Flickr, can also be imported into the stream much the same as Windows Live. Google Buzz provides recommendations for related content based on what it finds in your stream.
What does this mean in terms of internet marketing? Currently there are some limitations as far as it being aimed at personal users, and not businesses, since you can only create a personal Google profile. However, there are some ways marketing with Google Buzz could benefit your overall marketing reach.
Internet Marketing With Google Buzz
First things first – you have to create a Gmail account if you do not already have one. The best format is to use your company or brand name at Gmail dot com. You might consider also opening a personal email account, as well.
Of course, you also need a Google profile. What you include in your profile will also be added to your Buzz page. Once that is set up, you can find people you want to follow. You can base a search on location, gender, or interests but do try to find those related to your industry in some manner. The more ‘friends’ you can find, the better Google Buzz can make recommendations based on the content. The concept of reciprocity also works to encourage these people to follow you, too.
The next step is setting up the content streams. Add streams such as Twitter and Flickr account status updates. You can also stream your blog posts. Different types of content, from pictures to videos, keep your stream interesting and more apt to attract additional friends. Of course, this is also a chance to showcase your products or services, but don’t make the mistake of including obvious advertisements.
Remember the concept of informative and interesting content. Just as this type of content gets spread virally, it also increases the chances that it will appear at the top of other people’s Google-suggested content on their profiles. Google showcases not only content from a person’s followers, but those pieces that seem to fit the preferences of an individual based on their followers. So there is a strong chance that a great piece will be presented to someone you don’t even know.
If your company is comprised of more than one person, encourage your employees or even your affiliates to help you market with Google Buzz. Ensure they are active and update their own content often. The more profiles that are associated with your company, the more friends all of you can share and reach.
Remember that your efforts of marketing with Google Buzz are directly related to your use of social media. Not only are your Twitter updates going to show up on your profile, but your profile picture will appear in a Google search of the company name. Google also provides a social search. This is all good SEO and one area relates to others in some form or another.
As Google Buzz is refined over time, it may present further opportunities for internet marketing strategies but for now, these are some of the effective ways of marketing with Google Buzz.

Hi Sean, glad to see you are liking Google Buzz. But I have to disagree on a point or two.
First off, creating profiles in your business name is a mistake and a must at the same time.
Business names do really poorly in social marketing and no one wants to be friends on a social site with a business. But yes, set up profiles in your business name to lock down your brand. Do the same with Facebook and Twitter. In fact I suggest the /URL all be the same.
However, what you want to drive followers to and participate thru, is a profile in your real name. Because who you are is your brand in social media and to me that is me, Chris Lang. That is my brand. Trust in me is what sells product, not the product itself.
Secondly I do not recommend wiring all your blogs, Twitter and FriendFeed all together on Google Buzz. I suggest using Buzz as a microblogging platform and more of a forum. In fact I don’t have anything linked to my Buzz page. I pick and choose what to I post to Google Buzz and I get a huge response and return on that.
Check it out: http://www.google.com/profiles/chrislang
Lastly Sean, what is your Google profile URL so we can follow you?
Thanks for dropping by, Chris.
My profile is: http://www.google.com/profiles/srelite
I agree with you and appreciate your feedback. I will go and make changes to my profile now. We all live and learn
Cheers – Sean
Google Buzz is another indication of Google’s massively expanding internet empire. The question is how do we take full advantage of Google to optimize our internet marketing businesses? Buzz is definitely now a part of the overall strategy and time will tell how important it becomes. The question I have is do I have a separate Google account for each of my IM ventures, or do I have just the one account for all of them (this latter would save work but will lack focus on my specific niches).
Google does not only know the trends but obviously is out there creating their own trends. I haven’t used it up to now, but I guess it’s something you can’t go past in the near future if you are serious about using the internet …
I will investigate Google Buzz. Sounds interesting. Thanks for this informative article Sean.
Hi Sean,
I’ve been so busy I haven’t really looked at Google Buzz. I’m definitely going to have to get it set up and start using it. It really seems like another great way to get some exposure for my work.
There’s a lot to Social Media. I really have my work cut out for me in this arena.
