A monthly newsletter is a good way to keep in contact with your subscriber list. You provide valuable information and interesting content as well as repeated calls to action. This not only adds value to subscribers, it is another conversion tool in your online marketing arsenal.
But renting newsletter advertising space in someone else’s newsletter can also be quite beneficial.
Benefits Of Newsletter Advertising
One of the biggest benefits is the ability to reach further into your target market. The subscribers who receive someone else’s newsletter are more than likely a different set of people than those you market to. Choose the newsletter with care and this allows you to reach very targeted prospects who have already proven their loyalty. Readers who trust the newsletter’s owner will also trust the advertisers associated with it.
Writing your own newsletter can be a real chore; coming up with fresh topics and information on a monthly basis is often difficult. Using another company’s newsletter provides another way to reach prospective clients without having to develop your own piece – and it could get your own creative juices flowing again.
This is usually a very cost-effective means of online advertising. Rates depend on the popularity of the newsletter and the size of its subscriber base, but generally cost about $100 or so for inclusion in a single issue.
Tips For Making It Work
The most important key to making newsletter advertising work is finding the right fit. Obviously you don’t want to use your competitor’s marketing message but you do want to find one that already has a built-in audience likely to be interested in your company’s products or services. The best case scenario is finding a newsletter that deals with a subject matter complementary to your business.
A good way to start research is by subscribing to a prospective newsletter yourself. Take a look at the quality of the writing, the type of information provided, and determine whether or not your target market would be interested.
How long has the newsletter been in existence? You may be tempted to look for the lowest price for your advertisement but if the newsletter is a brand new one with cheap rates, it is unlikely to have attracted a loyal subscriber base yet. You get what you pay for.
Create an offer unique to the newsletter’s subscribers. For instance, you may want to advertise a freebie, such as shipping or an information product, exclusively to the readers of the newsletter. Show them that you understand their needs and reach out to them in a personal manner. This not only makes them feel special, it gives you a way to track the success of the advertisement.
The most effective newsletter advertising is a series. One ad in one newsletter is unlikely to garner the best results. Commit to this campaign for at least three months so that you build trust and brand recognition with readers over time.
Using someone else’s newsletter is a great form of advertising. Newsletter advertising can extend your marketing reach, help brand your company, and could very well result in increased sales for a cost-effective price.

Hi Sean,
There are so many different opportunities to reach prospective clients. I hadn’t thought of renting advertising space on someone else’ newsletter but why not?
I guess we’re only limited by our imagination and our ability to connect and create win-win deals with other people. Whether it’s renting advertising space on a newsletter or a blog; or exchanging banner ads and links; it all comes down to networking with people who offer complementary products and services.
Many, many opportunities out there indeed Jazz
Quite different and experimental tips i got here about advertising, Stored in my memory for future. Thanks
Hi Sean,
that’s an interesting idea. I haven’t used it but was wondering what you would prefer (or if it depends on the situation): paying for advertising in a newsletter or doing a “contra deal” – I advertise with you and you get advertisement with me.
But I agree with Jazz, we are only limited by our imagination and probably it’s best to check with each supplier individually.
There’s no reason a “contra” or “barter” type deal wouldn’t work Renee. As long as it’s a win-win situation for both parties it could work well
I had never even thought about advertising online in someone elses monthly newsletter. Thanks for the great idea. It could be a good way to get people on your own list as well if you offer a free product such as an ebook which people have to come to your website to get. Thanks for the idea Sean.
Another helpful tip when advertising on someone else’s newsletter is implementing a picture with your advertisement. I’ve done some studying on PPC, specifically on content pages on not search engine pages, and the most successful people are those that implement pictures into their ad. In fact, their picture ads receive twice as many clicks if not more! It’s amazing how our eyes are drawn towards certain colors and pictures.
The old saying, a picture is worth a thousand words surely has some truth about it Landon
Thanks Sean, this is a great idea, it did funnily enough dawn on me the other day! I will add it to my investigation task list!
A newsletter is something I will be starting in the next month so the above info is great! Thanks Sean
I wasnt aware that you could advertise in another person’s newsletter. I knew you could get space on a website so I guess this is similar. One thing that is very apparently different in the Internet world, as compared to offline business, there is more co operation
Hi Trish,
Very true! We would not see a bricks-and mortar retail store advertising another retail store’s products. It just wouldn’t be practicle to do so.
Also an online business has the benefit of being able to take our “shop” around werever we go, even on holidays, if we like. Finding online traffic can be a lot easier than sitting in a Mall waiting for shoppers to walk in.
Advertising in a newspaper is similar to placing an add with an online newsletter. I am guessing though that an online add had a better chance of being noticed than in a regular newspaper.
A simple, and I am sure effective idea to bring in some more income.
angus-mcdonald.com is currently under construction
This seems like a very effective tool to use. I had not thought of this before, but how handy it is to advertise your service in an newsletter which already has an established target audience of people you want to reach! Something so simply, yet surprisingly not so obvious. Thanks for the advice Sean
Was aware of newsletter advertising however never thought of renting space in another with the right target market to reach. What leverage! Great piece of advice!
I like this Idea Sean.
I have been developing my own newsletter and have a one person so far contributing in an area related but not in competition with mine.
I have not charged a price as this newsletter will be a freebie every month. I would like to get another contributor but I feel that if the newsletter is too big, people won’t read it past the first page. (I have kept it to 2 pages only)
I have kept the articles very short and sweet. What do you think? Should we consider the size of the newlsetter if we are going to advertise in other peoples’ newsletters?
Maybe you could write an article on newsletters unless there is one somewhere deep inside this huge library of information you have here!
Blessings,
Elly
Hi Elly,
Congratulations! You are going gang-busters. You’re doing some fantastic work and I’m sure you’re going to be getting some huge results very soon.
Keep up the great work.
I was completely unaware of this! the more I learn the more I realize how much more there is to learn. The idea of advertising on someones newsletter is brilliant. I guess it also teaches the importance of having your own newsletter so you can ‘sell’ the space yourself as well.
I like this idea of newsletter advertising. It is almost the opposite of the LCM that you taught us recently…LCM is more like getting others to advertise in our newsletter as suggested by David Pearse above. Very interesting.
Now I just need to decide if I have the time to create my own newsletter, or if I only want to advertise in someone else’s newsletter. Or both.
With regards to managing newsletters, do you use an autoresponder such as Aweber? I’ve heard Aweber is very good interms of managing mailing lists, with the ability to segment who goes on what list etc.
AWeber is a very good service Anthony
Advertising online on someone else’s newsletter?? Hhhmmmmm..Thinking hard about it now. Never even thought of that.
Thanks for that Sean.
Cheers
Rose
Hi Sean,
Thanks for the tips for renting newsletter advertising space!
Writing a weekly newsletter sounds like a heck of a lot of work so getting a spot on someone else’s newsletter sounds like a clever idea, especially if you can land a spot with one of the market leaders within in your target market.
Newsletters can be a lot of work true, but you probably have a lot of material at hand that you can use already.
The great thing about autoresponders is that you can pre-load as many as you want – it isn’t hard or time-consuming to spend an hour or two once a month preparing and pre-loading say half a dozen. They don’t (and shouldn’t) be too verbose and long.
You don’t have to be sending them every day or even every week. Depending on the topic – once a month or fortnightly is usually sufficient.
What sort of Newsletters do you write Peter?
I would like to see an example of one, and what type of Autoresponder program do you use?
I had never thought of renting newsletter advertising space. If anything, my thought were always centred around providing a newsletter for my customers. I like this idea….a great way to increase your customer database.
I wonder if this is something that can be outsourced eventually ( the same way contect can be)?
Regards Cath
Hi Sean,
Sounds like a great idea, now the project is to locate suitable newsletters.
I have heard that newsletters are also a very good form of a recurring income product…I would assume that you could outsource a newsletter and market it to say a email list to provide a passive income source…mmm..food for thought m/
A lot of schools offer advertising newsletter space and also on their school calendars – which means they are around for quite a few weeks. You can also go to print shops to see what opportunities there are. A lot of companies offer the space to pay for the printing costs.
