Top Bookmarking Sites – Popular Choices

by Sean Rasmussen on June 21, 2010

in Bookmarking

There are a lot of different social bookmarking sites out there… hundreds, in fact. They can help you gain an advantage in the search engines and can drive traffic to your blog or website. Utilising the top bookmarking sites can help you to drive traffic to your site and gain as much online exposure as possible.

Here are some sites you’ll want to use and some tips for getting the most out of social bookmarking. The jury is out on which are the top bookmarking sites but here are ten you might want to consider joining.

Top Bookmarking Sites

Top Bookmarking Sites

StumbleUpon
Digg
Delicious
Reddit
Mixx
Friendfeed
Mister Wong
Diigo

Bonus:

Ping.fm *
Onlywire *

* Pings multiple social bookmarking services for you – saving you time

You’ll hear varying opinions on which tool is best for link building, gaining a following, and maybe even driving some new sales. Truthfully, it all depends on how you use the tool, how popular your niche is on that site or community, and who is following you.

Social Bookmarking Tips

• Think up a good headline. If you want people to click, the headline has to grab their attention.

• Utilise tools within the tool. Digg offers images, many offer tags, StumbleUpon gives you a chance to review, Mixx suggests you get the conversation started. Utilise all the tools in each bookmarking site to get the most benefit from it.

• Follow others. If you’re on a social site, be sociable. You’ll build credibility on the site, get more of your links clicked and re-distributed, make it into search engines, and maybe hit the first page on certain sites.

• Don’t spam. Use social sites responsibly. By all means promote for yourself but also react to other postings, be a helpful community member, and contribute something meaningful to conversations.

Some internet marketers spend a little bit of time on social media. Some use it a lot. Some invest in tools to automate much of the process. Whatever the case is and whatever sites you feel are the top bookmarking sites, don’t forget that what you do online reflects on your business so be sure to be professional in your conduct on these sites and treat your followers as if they’re potential customers.

Have a most outstanding day.

I know with social media people can forget to be social! Its meant to be interactive so your advice is a good reminder. Also we have all seen people participating in social media that only blow their own trumpets and spam us all. A great way to have people unfollow and defriend
you.

Has anyone got a preference between ping and onlywire? I have also heard of posterous? I imagine they all do the same but any comments on this would be aprpeciated.

I think I will need to set myself a scheduled amount of time each day to participate in these activites or I risk my family thinking I am not so social anymore lol!

Ping.fm is one of my favourites Tara :-)

Tara

Pingfm is great. Only thing with Onlywire is they require a badge on your site. Have a look at SocialMarker as well.

Thanks Sean for your advice on social bookmarking. I am a member of quite a few but seem to get “lost” on them which ends up eating a lot of time. I need to stay more focused when on these social sites and use them to my advantage.

I had no idea there were so many Social networking sites out there! I thought that one you mentioned “stumbleupon” was interesting, and I’ll check that one out for sure as if it really is about “reviewing” as you mentioned than that will be a big thing for our particular business. This is great, so far in the last couple of days I’ve joined linkedin, twitter, dig and a new account on myspace! These things are alot more fun now that we have something to gain from them!!

cheers

Sean

G’day Sean,
2 years ago I’d heard of MySpace, and that was it !

In addition to the 6 in the BMT, I use Technorati, Blog Catalogue, Mixx, Zimbio, Socialoomph, Friendfeed, Plaxo, Linkedin, and the one you’ve started using Sphinn !

See what you’ve started ? That’s a total of 15 so far ! I enjoy some of the challenges of different passwords [ BLESS ROBOFORM ] and the subtle differences between each of the sites. I really like your point about an interesting headline, and have been trying to do that when I use the BMT – at least until 11.00 pm, after which Murphy sometimes strikes ! Always trying to be a gentleman on line, too.

Guess I better look into Ping, Mister Wong, Onlywire and Diigo

Cheers
Harry

Hey Sean,

Like the others, I had no idea, also, of the number of social networking sites that are out there. I’ve always considered my life to be pretty mundane, and uneventful (no-one wants to hear of the trails and tribulations of a cook, they’ve all got their own work issues! *LOL*). Will definitely have to start signing up to a few more, however, if I wish to truly succeed with IM.

Just a thought!

Cheers,

Pete

Hi Sean,

your list of the top bookmarking sites is throwing a few more into the ring for me – another challenge ;) . I like bookmarking sites and social media in general as it helps to stay in contact with others interested in similar topics.

What I am still struggling is to find my personal balance on the usage – how often, how long, how many, how much. But I guess the more I practice the better I will get on judging what’s right for me.

Hi Sean,

Wow! I’m struggling to master and keep up with the ones I have now and yet, there’s still more. I guess it does come down to trying them all and seeing which ones are the right fit for you and your business.

While we’re on the subject of socialising, do you have a list of the best internet marketing forums to join? I’ve seen a few but I’d really like your thoughts on which ones are worth our time?

Reply

17 Colin June 22, 2010 at 8:56 am

There’s only one IM forum to join Jazz – YOTA! ;)

That’s a great list – a few there I hadn’t heard of before. Off to check out Mr Wong.

Reply

18 Renee July 1, 2010 at 8:37 pm

I agree – to learn you need to go to the best :)

But YOTA doesn’t create backlinks, that’s delegated to the BMT ;)

19 Sean Rasmussen June 22, 2010 at 9:32 am

All of those sites would be worth your time Jazz, but like you say, try a few of them out and use the ones you like ;-)

Reply

20 Tori June 22, 2010 at 10:15 am

Gosh! Even more things to learn. Will put some time in today to join these sites. Like Renee will have to find the right balance for my time.

I’ve created an account on several of the site listed and done my first Ping! Now I just need to think of something interesting to say.

Hi Sean, thanks for the post! Just a question, is the purpose of ping.fm different to all the ping services we list in our WordPress Writing settings?

Reply

25 Sean Rasmussen June 22, 2010 at 5:10 pm

Ping.fm is used to send updates to different bookmarking sites etc. David. You can actually type out your update and include a link, very similar to Twitter, then choose which services you want the update sent to. It’s a service that is worthwhile checking out ;-)

My partner commented above about how we are so amazed at all the sites there are out there. We have joined so many just in the last couple of days. This list on here just add to list we didnt know was out there, you are a fantastic resource. I had not heard of a single one on your list but am looking forward to getting to know all of them!

I have found Stumble Upon to be an excellent resource. At times I have had big surges of traffic via Stumble Upon.

It seems if you submit a post that strikes a chord it gets passed around.

Hi Sean,
As everyone has said, so many social and bookmarking sites, will have to see which ones suit best. No one could one keep up with them all so it comes down to a matter of choice?

I notice you have another Twitter page seanseo It popped up here while I’m typing a comment. I don’t know how that happens but glad it did cos now I know it exists. Also with all the sites you mentioned in the last few articles I’m wondering where AdlandPro fits into it all. What type of site is it?

Reply

31 Jazz Salinger July 11, 2010 at 8:54 am

Hi Jill,

I use AdlandPro as a classifieds site. I advertise in the same way I would with the classifieds you get in a newspaper only online. However I think you can use it as a networking site. You can fill out a profile and join a forum if you want to. Actually it’s probably not a bad idea. :)

Hi Sean

And I thought I would just be Twittering and Digging! What a selection. I will have a sniff around and see which ones I like.

It only took me 12 months to get onto Twitter (lol) so I will need to accelerate the process to sign up to all of those.

Thankyou for all the links Sean, I really appreciate that.

Blessings
Elly

It’s amazing how often now you hear the words ‘social media’ mentioned on the radio and TV daily especially Facebook and Twitter , I expect it won’t be long before many of the other sites come to the fore.

It boggles my mind… and that’s not hard to do either, of how many bookmarking sites there are. Mister Wong & Mixx flew under my radar. I will get onto those ones ASAP!

How do you keep track?? Time Management needs to take on it’s own bookmarking I tells ya’! Or maybe learn how to stop time for a wee bit so I can get more done!

Reply

35 Sean Rasmussen June 24, 2010 at 9:56 am

Try saving all of the sites to a single folder in your browser bookmarks Samantha, that’s a great way to keep track of them all ;-)

Reply

36 Cemil June 30, 2010 at 2:12 pm

Everything in moderation Sam ;)

I seem to find myself spending more and more time on Facebook. So for me it will be to cut down on the time spend there and get onto a Diigo! (will have to check that one out)

Nice list. Don’t see Yahoo! Bookmarks or Google Buzz. Thought that there would be more detail on how to utilise each site rather than a few references. The bit about etiquette at the end was good.

38 Sean Rasmussen June 24, 2010 at 10:23 am

I can’t add everything to my top bookmarking sites list Lincoln. As for detailed reports, this is a blog post outlining some good services to use, not a 30 page thesis :-)

Nice list Sean. Good to see that I am using most of them.

I have been trying to find a good Bookmarking aggregator so that I can have a tool where I can see and use multiple bookmarking sites. There are many for social media which saves so much time if you have multiple profiles across multiple services, but have not been able to find a similar tool for bookmarking. I don’t want to just send out a mass of links to bookmarking sites, but rather use and interact as well.

Wow! look at all of the top bookmarking sites.
I have heard of most of them, but am yet to try them and join them.
Yes, they are on my “to do” list.

Thankyou Sean for a most informative post.
I have just got my head around Facebook and Twitter (using them that is) as I always thought I didn’t have enough time to do all of this “socializing” as well as everything else.

But I’ll get there.

My Stumbleupon toolbar has been missing – and lo and behold it has re-appeared on my computer – so I hit the Stumble “like it’ and put in a review of this good article on bookmarking.

While I was at it I Dugg it and re-tweeted – need the practice to develop a habit of doing all this

Do you guys think having too many bookmark links at the end of your posts is a turn off? Information overload perhaps?
