Pinging is still a bit of a secret for me – ok, I know that sounds stupid but I admit it :)
I am doing it on my blogs, but still not sure what I am actually doing :( As long as it helps I will keep on doing it.

Pinging should all be taken care of in WordPress automatically Renee. All you need to do is put a list of ping URL’s into settings>>writing>>update services within the WP dashboard. The MBP ping optimiser plugin is also recommended.

Hi Sean,

Yes, pinging is taken care of automatically with WordPress. It’s the easiest way to let the world know I have new content. This is so much better than having to manually share my new posts.

Yes Sean the pinging is enabled on my blogs.
My problem is that when each post is pinged a lot of them are returned with errors when the ping goes through.
Maybe I need an updated list.
Should I leave it or delete out the ones that aren’t working?

I am just beginning to see how important it is to tag a post with relevant keywords so that it’s found easily by someone who may be searching for it.

I’d never given consideration to pinging to automatically spread the word of a new blog post. But it certainly could be a time saver.

I had a quick look at the docs for Drupal and it appears that pinging can also be taken care of automatically. It utilizes Ping-o-Matic to contact the various social bookmarking sites. I’ll have to get it configured on one of my sites which uses Drupal.

Now to see how it’s handled in Joomla.

Pinging is all taken care of for my blogs via wordpress settings and MBP Ping Optimizer is activated. Which means the MBP takes care of the pinging which does a far better job than wordpress. Now my blog doesn’t spam the ping lists with every single update and alteration :-)

I must look into that MBP thingo! I just checked my internet blog and it was overloaded with bits coming from who knows where – including my tweets and so on. I turned off comments and removed RSS – but that seems the wrong thing now I read the above.

I have not pinged my blogs other than to write a note on my facebook fan page and my personal page, and to note it on Twitter. I will check out those autoping programs. Those do sound pretty handy. I also do write tags for my blogs. :)

I am with you Elizabeth. I have not pinged anything yet but I am really interested in the results that people get from doing this.

I have WordPress on my blog so I am going to set it up. It is a great way to advertise that you have new content on your blog.

Anything which you can do to get your blog out there is really important and the quicker the better! If you need to put flashing lights around your website to get the traffic – then get the biggest and the brightest!

The attention needs to be in the detail and its great having you lay out the details which we need to take care of!
